When Creation Crowds Out the Creator

Spotting spiritual detours and coming back to the source

What Are You Searching For?

What you searching for? Truth? Justice? The American Way?

GEORGE REEVES: A Birthday Salute | 13th Dimension, Comics, Creators, Culture

Maybe you seek contentment. Maybe it’s confirmation.

Truth vs Comfort

Jeremiah says, “spiritual framework and longing is easily misdirected or perverted, because our sin makes us love darkness rather than God’s light. People who want a spiritual plaything or placebo are quick to bring their search for God to a dead end, and to search instead for angels.”

Read that again - but leave off ‘and to search instead for angels.’ People don’t normally search out God because of their sin, any more than a bank robber would seek out a police officer. People look for ‘love’ and acceptance when they don’t want to change. They aren’t looking for truth; they are looking for happiness. Or, to use another word, comfort.

When people find God as He truly is - as He is revealed in the Bible, they quickly realize that He loves us IN SPITE of ourselves. None of us DESERVE God’s love - that’s why it is a gift of grace!

It’s in that undeserved grace that real truth is found. So I ask again - what are YOU searching for? Is it truth? I submit to you that there is but ONE truth, and all paths do NOT lead to the Creator God of the universe. Keep that in mind as you read and study along with me… Do you have specific questions? Comments and questions are always welcome here, but if you’d rather talk personally, I promise not to share your details or anything.

Don’t Stop at Angels

Christianity Today warned, ‘Angels too easily provide a temptation for those who want a ‘fix’ of spirituality without bothering with God himself.’” In the words of Mr. Potter, I’ll go further than that! It is easy for people to believe in angels and still follow satan. Ask a Christian who has come out of New Age - angels can be a HUGE part of it!

If angels are your goal, you’re stopping with another part of the creation and not the Creator. This is no different than worshipping nature, mother earth, etc.

The next point from Jeremiah is, “angels are not the Creator; they were created by the Creator, just as food and sex and ourselves and other people were.” We are warned of this in Scripture.

Romans 1:25They chose a lie instead of God’s truth. They worshiped and served created things. They didn’t worship the Creator. But he must be praised forever. Amen.

And this isn’t just a New Testament idea. God warned His people from the very beginning not to chase created things, even if they looked spiritual or powerful.

Deuteronomy 4:19Don’t let yourselves be tempted to bow down to the sun, moon and stars. The Lord your God has given them to all the nations on earth. But he hasn’t given them to you.

Even in the early church, this was still a problem:

Colossians 2:18Some people enjoy pretending they aren’t proud. They worship angels. But they don’t really know what they are talking about. They are proud of their useless ideas.

Earth Day - and the push to honor “Mother Earth” - sometimes nudges us toward the spiritual trap Scripture warns us about. Calling the world our “mother” may sound poetic, but it drifts dangerously close to worship of creation rather than the Creator. As one Christian writer cautioned, “The material world does not have a ‘mother.’ … All honor and glory for the magnificence and grandeur of creation belongs to Him.”

Others go even further - pointing out how Earth Day messaging and the term “Mother Earth” can echo ancient pagan ideas, replacing God with personified creation.

This isn’t just a modern oversight - it clashes with clear biblical teaching. A thoughtful overview reminds us: “The idea of the earth as our mother is not biblical. The Bible portrays nature as God’s beautiful work…but not to be worshiped.”

When Good Things Become Idols

Believe it or not, this same distortion can show up in things like veganism — not the diet itself, but the motivation. If someone chooses it because they value animals more than people — more than the human beings made in God’s image — it’s the same issue: worshiping creation over the Creator.

Even loving your family more than you love God is putting the creation first. I know that sounds harsh — but Jesus didn’t soften it either.

Matthew 10:37“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. Anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”

This isn’t about being cruel — it’s about putting the Creator above the created, even when the created are the people we love most. He is NOT telling us to not love our family, but to make sure the God of the universe gets top billing! He goes on to say:

Luke 9:24“Whoever wants to save their life will lose it. But whoever loses their life for me will save it.”

A Good Reminder

Here’s a good reminder - especially for those who don’t think much about the spiritual world or demons: Why would God warn you not to do something if it wasn’t possible to do it? Why would God warn us against something that wasn’t real? Why would He tell us not to worship angels or serve creation if those weren’t actual traps people fall into? He doesn’t waste words. If God says “don’t do it,” it means it’s both real and possible - and sadly, far too common.

People say things like, “God is in nature.” And that’s true - you can absolutely find evidence of the Creator in creation. But you’ll never find the will of God for your life out there in the woods or under the stars.

I’ll be honest - I’d love to buy an RV and just hit the road, experience creation, see the beauty of God’s world! But if I did that instead of serving in my local church… instead of using the gifts He gave me… instead of pointing people to Christ… then I’m just chasing creation over the Creator. That would be sin.

Same goes for relationships. Salesmen are told “ABC – Always Be Closing.” Well, for believers, maybe it’s “Always Be Pointing” - not to the stars, but to the One who made them.

You don’t have to preach at people. But if you live it - and I mean REALLY live it -people will notice. They’ll see your priorities. And they’ll see His.

In Closing

What are you pointing to today? Is it comfort? Career? Angels? A cause?

Or is it the God who created it all?

My prayer is that we keep our eyes fixed on Him - and that the world sees not just us living… but Him living in us.

Would you pray this with me? Right now?

Father - you alone are worthy of my worship. Forgive me for the times I’ve chased created things instead of You - even good things that became too important.

Help me to see the difference between appreciating what You made and worshiping it. Help me to love people deeply, but always to put You first.

I want to live in a way that points to You - not just with words, but with my priorities, my choices, my heart.

Show me where I’ve let Your creation crowd out You - the Creator. And give me the courage to set it right.

In Jesus’ name - Amen.
